Which Schools Should You Apply To?
Personally, I think the most consistent and reliable rankings are a combination of Business Week and US News. Financial Times also has good rankings that include International schools.
First, you should have a rough idea of what you want to do and where you want to live after business school. If you have a particular industry and/or location of interest make sure that you use this information in your decision process. For example, if you wanted to be an investment banker in New York, it makes sense for you to include more east coast schools that typically get more recruiters from the New York based companies.
The next step is to choose schools that you are interested in and research the school’s placement statistics and the companies that recruit there. Many of the management consulting and investment banking companies publish recruiting schedules on their website which can be helpful if you want to see if the schools you are interested in are included. Although some schools are well known for their strengths in particular subject areas, don’t let that distract you from doing a thorough look at their curriculum
to see if they have concentrations in the areas you are interested in.
I want to stress that rankings are just one of many criteria you want to use when choosing your schools. Always visit the school and meet the current students to get a feel of the culture and environment before you apply.
